Cwmbran - Welsh - Cwmbrân

Cwmbran (Welsh: Cwmbrân) is a new town in southern Wales, established in the 1950s to provide new employment in the south eastern portion of the South Wales Coalfield. 'Cwmbran' means valley of the crow in the Welsh language. Based around the villages of Old Cwmbran, Pontnewydd, Upper Cwmbran, Croesyceiliog, Llantarnam and Llanyrafon, it has grown to house almost 50,000 people within 50 years of its creation.

Location

Sitting as it does on the corner of the South Wales Coalfield it has a hilly aspect to its western and northern edges, with the surrounding hills climbing to over 1,000 feet. The Afon Llwyd forms the major river valley; although the most significant water course is probably the remains of the Monmouthshire canal. To the east of Cwmbran the land is less hilly, forming part of the Usk valley.

Cwmbran Shopping Centre

Cwmbran Shopping Centre is advertised as the largest under-cover shopping centre in Wales. Unlike most shopping centres, which are usually situated on the outskirts of towns and cities, Cwmbran's town centre is formed wholly by the shopping centre.

Education

The town is home to three comprehensive schools: Croesyceiliog School, Llantarnam School and Fairwater High School. There are numerous primary and nursery schools as well as the Welsh medium school, Ysgol Gynradd Cymraeg. The town centre also boasts a 'Learn-IT' centre (part of Coleg Gwent).

The town is perhaps most widely known now for its international sports stadium, home to international athletics events in the 1970s and 1980s. The stadium is also the home the football teams, Cwmbran Town and Cwmbran Celtic. Separate grounds at Pontnewydd and [[Croesyceiliog house the town's two senior rugby teams, Cwmbran and Croesyceiliog, although many more of the town's residents owe their allegiances to the rugby sides in the older, adjacent town of Pontypool, and city of Newport.

Transport

Cwmbran railway station is served by trains on the Welsh Marches Line.
Cwmbran is twinned with Bruchsal, Germany and Carbonne, France.
It is often joked that Cwmbran has the most roundabouts per square mile than any other town, hence its nickname as 'Home of the Roundabout'.

I live on the Pacific Coast of USA, in Washington State. I live in the forest of evergreen trees. A logging town. This small town is near the Olympic Mountains. From where I live you also get a perfect view of Mount Rainier. As you probably Know another one of our mountains blew its top a few years ago, the volcano called Mount Saint Helens. My home sits near the Puget Sound, an ocean inlet, sometimes whales come by to visit out there on their way to Alaska. I have loved this place so much. The nearest big city is Olympia, our states capitol. Mostly I love going 100 miles away to Seattle to shop and visit my friends. Love that big city, but love to get back to the woods in the end of the day.

Right now I am living in vancouver washington... but I am originally from a little town in northern italy called Roveredo In Piano.. I met a pagan on myspace who is from the same area (shame we never met while I was still there) who has told me a litltle bit of the history there.. apparently, a long time ago, the Pope ordered people to hunt in the woods around that area for pagans.. many horrible things have happened there.. if I only knew when i was there!! ack! lol

I lived in Cwmbran last 2 years I am originally from a place called victoria village
in the area known as Abersychan - I lived their for around 30 years of my life.

Abersychan

UK Parliament Torfaen
European Parliament Wales
List of places: UK • Wales • Torfaen

Abersychan is a large suburb of Pontypool, Torfaen in South Wales. It lies in the narrow northern section of the Afon Llwyd valley. The town includes three schools, Abersychan Comprehensive School, Victoria Primary School and St. Francis' R.C. Primary School (although the latter is due to close, along with St. Alban's R.C. Primary School, to be replaced by the new Padre Pio R.C. Primary School in Pontypool) and various shops/other amenities.

Abersychan was the birthplace of the Rt. Hon. Paul Murphy, MP for Torfaen, Roy Jenkins, Baron Hillhead, and Bryn Meredith.

Local government

Abersychan now constitutes a community and electoral division of the county borough of Torfaen. The area was anciently part of the parish of Trevethin, in Monmouthshire. On June 3, 1864 Abersychan was constituted a local government district, governed by a local board.[1] In 1894 Abersychan became an urban district and civil parish. The urban district was abolished in 1935, with most of its area passsing to Pontypool urban district, and a small area going to Abercarn UD.

In 1974 the area became part of the borough of Torfaen, in the new local government county of Gwent. A community of Abersychan was formed in 1985, but to date no community council has been formed.[2] In 1996 Torfaen became a unitary authority.

The Abersychan community includes Abersychan, Cwmavon, Garndiffaith, Pentwyn, Talywain, Varteg, and Victoria Village.

Pentwyn

Pentwyn, Torfaen is a small village located in the district of Abersychan. It contains a post office, a chapel, several houses and a small play park. The village has a cricket team (Pentwyn CC) and is located right next to the old railway line. The cricket club celebrated its 100 year anniversary in 2006 with a successful tour to Cork, Ireland. The village has superb views over the River Severn and Newport to the south.

Victoria Village

Victoria Village is a small settlement located in the district of Abersychan. It comprises a small village school and a number of houses. A small group of houses on Incline Road mark the beginning of the village and the village boundary is near Cwmavon. Victoria Primary School is also in this area on a large grounds. Many homes are built around the school's boundaries.
